Dates for the Screener: The date for the next Tracker SFI Screener will be October 9-13, 2009. We will begin taking applications this summer. All persons wishing to be considered for a tracking team must successfully complete the screener at the level of involvement for which they are applying.
What will be tested on the Screener? The Screener will be broken down into four parts. There will be physical fitness test, a written exam, a tracking and skills field test, and, for those that are interested in being on the primary team, an interview in front of a panel of Tracker staff members. The physical fitness test will be a pass/fail event, and will not be designed to “weed people out.” Its purpose will be to ascertain whether or not the applicant is physically qualified to do the job. The test will be comprised of a 4 mile walk for time while carrying a 40 lb pack, a two-minute timed max set of push-ups, and a two-minute timed max set sit-ups. Qualifying times for each event are 1 hour and 10 minutes for the walk, 40 push-ups in two minutes, and 60 sit-ups in two minutes. Women will be allowed to do push-ups from the kneeling position. For the written and field test, all testable information for tracking will be taken directly from lectures presented in the Standard, Advanced Tracking and Awareness Courses, as well as from the book, The Science and Art of Tracking. Applicants should be as well-versed in the technical aspects of tracking, such as track measurements and technical definitions, as they are in reading pressure releases and following a trail. Applicants will also be expected to have a working knowledge of Debris Huts, Bow Drill, Hand Drill, the Figure 4 trap, the Paiute Trap, and the Rolling Snare. For those applicants that are interested in being on the Primary Team, the interview will be designed to determine the ability of the applicant to work effectively as part of a team, and that he or she has the proper personality profile and ethical foundation to be a Primary Team Member. |
